Specifically, the French Legislative Assembly of 1791 to 1792, during the Revolution, when the country was functioning as a constitutional monarchy (like what Great Britain has now). The royalists sat on the right side of the chamber, while the radicals sat on the left side. The terminology just simply stuck liberals as being on the left and conservatives on the right.
