I would suggest a college course for an in depth look. You can also find info on the CIA world fact book about the US as well as other countries. Local US embassies are always a help. Your question is too general for a straight answer. I would suggest www.firstgov.gov for all your questions. It's the first stop I make on any government questions.

Its pretty simple really.

We have three branches. Executive, Legislative and Judicial. The Executive is the President. The Legislative is the Congress - they pass laws, make new laws, waste alot of time debating gay marriage while we are waring with Iraq, yet dont actually pass any resolutions on it..... I digress.... The Judicial brach is the Supreme Court - they try cases involving law, and either uphold the law or over turn the law.

Each branch is supposed to protect the people from another branch. So, the President does something wrong, the Legislative Branch or Judicial Branch can do something about it. Likewise, if the Legislative Branch passes a stupid law, the President can smack it down. The Supreme Court though - what they say pretty much goes...

However, here is lies the rub: The system is falling apart. The Supreme Court recently ruled against the Bush Administration, telling them that they could not hold military tribunals for those at Guantanamo Bay jail. Bush and his cronies refuse to listen and keep at it. When the country voted for Kerry last election and Florida Gov Jeb Bush fudged the vote so Georgie could win Florida state, the Supreme Court actually upheld it! So, Bush has managed to fill every level of government with his cronies and friends, and thus the entire system is corrupted and non-functionable.

Most Americans couldnt even tell you whats going on. Our Government has used fear of death as a tactic to strip away our freedoms, illegally wiretap our phones and check out library records, etc. And no one cares, because they think the government is trying to protect us from al Qaeda....

No, you don't. It's so confusing and stupid, it makes my head want to explode.

Basically: Americans vote for the biggest idiot up for election. Anyone that actually cares about taking care of the people doesn't even get enough money to run. It's all corporate sponsored jerks!
