My son has his first truck and the alternator just went out. He is very handy and good with mechanical things, but has never worked on a car. Would replacing this alternator be something he could learn to do or is it something that is more complicated?

Thank you!

The alternator on this truck is very easy to get to and remove compared to many cars (especially front wheel drive cars). A new F-150 alternator costs about $130.

The Ford 4.6 L and 5.4 L engines in the '98 F-150 both use a serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner to drive the alternator and other engine accessories. So your son would not have to worry about how hard to tighten the alternator belt.

Disconnect the postive battery terminal to avoid blowing a fuse or damaging the new alternator.

Here's the correct answer. It's not that hard to do; all that's required is for him to have is a socket wrench and a couple of different size sockets, basically. The alternator is located in an easy to reach spot and shouldn't take more than 20 mins or so to change out. Remember to disconnect the battery first. Also have him make sure to remember where the wires attach on the back of the alternator. His truck should just have one serpentine belt to deal with, and I believe it has an automatic tension adjuster so he doesn't even have to worry about tightening the belt after installing the new alternator. It should present few if any problems for a first timer.

Hope this helped.

Not a good first job and dangerous in some respects if you don't have any training. He should start by attending a short course at his community college in my opinion, or at least have a very experienced car mechanic work with him on different aspects of safe auto repair. Just raising the hood with the engine idling can be dangerous if you put your hands and arms in the wrong places or forget to park the car properly with the parking brake engaged.

If he never fixed anything on a car I would say that it is going to be complicated for him. But if he can get a friend or someone to just tell him what to do, he should be able to do it.
