i have updated the computer and the disc i put in it says that i have to new of a version......maybe i am using the wrong disc which one am i supposed to use

Sound to me that the issue is that when you bought the pc, (assuming this is XP home or pro) it had a earlier version (like service pack 1 or no service pack). Since then you have updadted. If you want to restore it to it's original config, you leave the restore CD in the drive and reboot.

WARNING: This will most likly erase EVERYTHING on the drive and start over. Some version of the restore will allow you to keep documents, pictures and music. I would find out from Dell support first.
