I have been suffering with back pain for the last 10 years. Treatment would depend on what and where the injury is. Doans will do nothing....and instead of heat try ice. Most likely you just strained the muscle, especially if you had no pain before. Sometimes we lift, pull etc., and our footing is not right and "oops" there goes the back. Unfortunately for me mine is surgery and that's why I still have the pain...
Rest, no lifting and try ice...Good luck

What a lot of people don't realize is that chronic back pain can be caused by having weak abdominal muscles. Your upper body has a lot of mass to it and the only thing supporting it in your torso is your spine and abs. Once your abs get weak, then you become prone to injury and re-injury.
I'd suggest some low impact abdominal work with a swiss ball. If it hurts, then stop and see a doctor.

If the pain is shooting down your legs, go now. If it is localized to your back and you can live with the level of pain you have, I would wait almost 2 weeks. Most back pain will resolve in approximately 2 weeks. If this is a frequent occurrence, you might want to go anyway and ask for a referral to a physical therapist/physiotherapist (depends on your location) for some back stability and lifting education. The bottom line is if you feel you really need to go to the MD, then go.

If the home treatments and PT Physical Therapy isn't giving you SOME relief, see DOC, back pain is a big pain and can keep you down for a long time! Make sure your doing abdominal strengthening and leg lifts, this will help you rehab more quickly!

You should go see the doctor anyways, back pain is one of the most serious injuries, you will want to get anything checked out because a small injury can lead to something more troubling in the future if it's not taken care of.
