Looking at this site I am afraid that our world is doomed to be controlled by a bunch of hamburger flippers in the near future....maybe Bush is just the beginning of the downfall?

I learned basic spelling, grammar and sentence structure in Mrs. Polletti's first grade class. If you don't know how to spell use the damn spell checker that Yahoo provides its right next to the box where you type your answers.

You feel this way because our accumulated written knowledge is the way we transmit from one generation to the next the fundamental underpinnings of our civilization. These underpinnings are endangered by the laziness and apathy you see about you.

As the current generations begin to forget how to write and read words that have more than five letters and/or two syllables, the vast majority of people will lose the absolute basics of what it takes to operate and produce the equipment that we have. Slowly, as this either blasphemous technology of the devil or collection of magical boxes of doohickeys (depending on which path of ignorance one chooses) starts to break down, people will begin warring over the last vestiges of operating technology. Those that succeed in the Tech Wars will live like kings (relatively speaking) while the monosyllabic, grunting, Survivoramericanidolites** scrabble among the wreckage of megalopoli for cans of warm Miller Lite and ancient bags of Cheetos. The truly impressive despotic chieftains of the Survivoramericanidolites will live in luxury (for them) with salvaged toilet paper and wickedly pointed sticks, until they run out of Ginsu knives looted from Wal-Marts and can't make any more sharp cutty things.

Save our future! Punctuate! Learn how to spell, strive for the dizzying heights of basic grammar and syntax! Only you can save the world.

**A word much too long for the people described, this term will be used in the New Renaissance centuries in the future by anthropologists studying the Second Dark Ages

I understand that English is not everyone's first language, and I can excuse that kind of mistake. But come on, everyone in the US has the chance to learn basic spelling and grammar in grade school. Maybe it's just a personal thing, but when I see misspelled words and terrible grammar, it's almost like being slapped in the face. Painful!

So i was raised to speak French only. Then I decided to speak English so I put my self thru English College and English University. Most professors told us that the French Canadian wrote better english than English Canadian students. We had no choice but to apply our brain on paper in order to pass .
Yahoo has given me a golden opportunity to write as I pleaze
To write without a university guideline
To write as a form of art, a form of expression
Regardless of typical errors
Do you speek French
I do
and English too
who cares about your insecurities
grammatical annoyance is for stupid people
smart people don't give a rats ***
I have met the smartest people of my life on Yahoo
during the day
cuz they are so smart, they can type during the day
on their laptop
anywhere in the world
and I even intentionally changed tjhe spelling of a word
so I could too use it legally

I am an English teacher, and poor grammar and spelling are an anathema to me. However, I do not feel it is a sign of trouble. You have to remember that English is a living language and is constantly changing. Even the spelling of words changes over time. So.....I guess my view is that I will continue to pound grammar and syntax into the heads of my students, but I will always keep in mind that in the cosmic scheme of things it's not too critical. However, your comment about Bush, well.....

You get that sinking feeling because if people cannot be troubled to take a few seconds to spell out a word or punctuate a sentence correctly, they can hardly be expected to educate themselves about their politicians, defend their civil rights, or lend a compassionate hand to another human being in trouble.

I understand the question completely, and I have several weeks supply of food laid in for the imminent collapse of society. Well, maybe not imminent, but I do have water set aside just in case. :)

Hamburger flippers? That's a little condescending! Some "hamburger flippers" are actually the owners of the company and make a great living. Without "hamburger flippers", who would wait on a snob like yourself?

Finally, somebody else sees the importance of proper grammar and spelling in the American-English language! I'm astonished that there are other people who seemingly know the difference between "who" and "whom", "further" and "farther", and "ask" and "axe". Perhaps it is the downfall of the American society. People today don't read anything; they only watch television and play video games. Americans know only what they have to know, and most of them only have to know how to flip burgers or cheat the government through the welfare system.

people from all over the world are participating in yahoo answers because some of them wants to help, some of them feels they belong to a group (yahoo answer group), some of them are just browsing through and decided to join in. Whatever their reasons are I guess we should be thankful that despite of difficulty in spelling and what you call poor structure of english, they are trying to reach out to people. i think i'd rather be with this kind of person than with an insensitive perfect english speaker.

not all intelligent people speak perfect english and not all people who speak perfect english are intelligent.

Because all the really smart people are out working and not on line here in the middle of the day!

Also - spelling does not equal intelligence.
