By remebering that they are customers and not just sick people (hospital) I try to always smile and make eye contact, and remember their names and faces so that when I see them out in the real world I can say hi and ask how they are doing.

But, if you are asking about my job in particular? I am able to be flexible and take ownership of their specific needs. In other words, treat them like people rather than just money machines.
