So we can end with the best. Or maybe (in the case of eating) so that we will be more likely to finish our food because the best part is still there. But not everybody follows this rule - my wife is weird and she doesn't care at all what comes first or last. She can even read the end of a book first.

This goes back to the Biblical story about Jesus turning water into wine. At the wedding there were so many guests that they ran out of wine. At that time it was traditional to serve the best wine first so that by the time cheaper wine was served the guests would have drunk enough not to notice. When the wine ran out Mary, Jesus' mother sent for the servants and told them to do whatever Jesus asked. He bade them bring water in waterpots, which he blessed, and the water turned into wine which was then distributed to the guests. They were amazed at the fine quality of the wine and said to the host "Most people would serve the finest wine first, but you have saved the best until last!"
