The stuff in your room may affect sound quality. You should get a good pair of headphones - their sound will be unaffected by the room qualities, so this will represent your "perfect" sound. Next, adjust your equalizer to mimic this sound within the room. Whn your room sound matches the perfect sound, you have succeeded.

If you want true perfection, you need a Real Time Analyzer (RTA) setup, which measures the room's acoustics with a perfect sound right on its screen, and allows you to make adjustments with absolute precision. The headphone hack is a less-expensive alternative to that.

I presume you are talking graphic equalisation ie bass & treble.
I find that I adjust mine according to the music I'm listening to - some recordings are better produced than others, and some have been recorded with more bass/treble than others

Buy a graphic or spectrum analyser and hook it up to the tape in/outputs of your amplifier. Adjust the frequencies so that the shape of the controls looks like a smile, e.g. high "lows" - flat midrange and high "highs"

A good quality system does not need adjustment. Hence high end kit doesn't have tone controls.
