Straight vinegar in a spray bottle - spray the weeds on a hot sunny day. The vinegar will kill whatever it hits so be careful. And it really needs to be a sunny day because it doesn't work so well if it's overcast.

In a week or so go back and throw a little grass seed down - follow the directions. Water well and don't walk on the new seedlings until their established.

I have the same problem just across lake Erie. It is a little late in the season for major yard work however. Scott's Weed and Feed will help kill the weeds and increase the strength of your grass. This isn't a good time to plant grass because July and August tend to be dry and hot and the new grass will burn out. This fall, put lime (Calcium Oxide) in your yard. It will prevent weeds next spring and next spring spread grass seed.

I'd scrounge up a few bucks and buy granular weed & feed. It has an herbicide in it to kill weeds, and a fertilizer to strengthen the grass. Strong, healthy grass does not support weed growth, so W&F does both at once.

If you can' afoord W&F, get a spade and dig up the weeds at teh roots. Then water the holes. The grass will migrate to the water adn fill in.

first of all, before the person before me scares you from using roundup, it is one of the most amazing chemicals on the market for killing stuff. it is poisonous and will kill everything it touches. BUT if you follow the directions you will have success 100% of the time. every chemical gives instructions and information about how, where, when, and when not to use. you just have to follow them.

FIND OUT WHAT TYPE OF WEED IT IS!!!

by doing this it will save you some money by not wasting it on chemicals that wont kill the weed.
Look at what the chemical will kill before buying it.
Most weed and feed fertilizers/ weed-b-gones and stuff like that will not kill grassy types weeds.
If you have these types of weeds you will need a product with MSMA.

ps if you dont need to fertilize your yard, dont buy a weed and feed this will also save you alot of money. and lastly, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. most people get what they need but dont read. b/c weed killers usuallly tell you to mow, and then say something about watering the chemical in or not watering at all.
if you have bermuda grass, try cutting it one level lower and cutting it more often. bermuda will choke out alot of weeds if cut low(1"-1.5") and kept cut.

DON'T use Round-Up - it'll kill all your grass, too!

Round-Up is highly poisonous and should only be used where you don't what ANYTHING living, like in the cracks of sidewalks, on your deck or driveway.

Check with your local lawn and garden store for the best product. If you're on a limited budget, treating smaller areas at a time to begin with combined with good old bending and pulling is about all you can do for now.

Pull out the weeds. The grass will grow and fill out those areas. Pull them out by the roots or they will come back. Start off with small areas first then gradually get bigger. It takes time but it works and next year you will have a nice lawn.

Get a bag of Weed and Feed. It comes in a 25 pound bag and its sold either by Scotts, or another brand.

It will kill the grass, but leave brown spots, where they were, so, if your grass is full of weeds, your gonna have alot of brown spots on the lawn.

I wish you well..
