Good question. Is it not tradition (religion, culture)? Is it not necessity (breathing, eating)? Surely these are addictions. What about free will? Doesn't free will oppose addiction? Hmmm freedom and will are indeed beyond definition. I guess from what I can gather, addiction is the expectation of satisfaction, or the drive to be satisfied. I'm beginning to think that unexpectation is more than satisfactory, in fact some call it suprising. So, if we do not expect things or look for satisfaction, we have no need for addiction of course. In other words, finding satisfaction becomes unsatisfying; to not look for satisfaction, everything is satisfying.

To me it is the pursuit of a maladaptive behavior. To the extent that it separates one from a good, wholesome life that one "should" be leading. For example if you are doing yahoo answers when you shoudl be working, and you could lose your job over it. When your are getting drunk instead of going to work. When you are getting high when you should be taking the kids to the park. When you are using an activity to escape from real life.

Like our DNA, addiction is a pattern (of behavior)... a habit. Stemming from and fed by our inherant desire and/or need for consistancy...and/or pleasure.
