Which society? In western society I don't think it does (maybe I'm being idealistic). But in other societies, such as Islamic cultures or Asian, it's more than double standards, it's oppression.

Because this society has allowed it, unfortunately.
Too many people are scared of feminists, so they make fun of those of us who strive for an equality-based society. Using terms like, "femi-nazi" helps no one. The funny thing is feminism doesn't mean "masculine female," it means equal treatment. Instead of being the "weaker sex" with lower pay, it means equality. Which doesn't mean that a woman can't stay home and raise children, it means that all women can have the choice about how they live.
It's difficult to understand equality when too often families can't afford to have one partner stay home and raise children. But then why do the women who have to work, have to accept a lower paying job than their husbands/S.O. have? This is WRONG.
The greatest leap forward in the realm of equality are men who are feminists. They are truly the coolest people.

because of the last 2000 + years.
i wish i knew. i ask this every day of my life. my famiy and friends call me the "femi- nazi" because I am a feminist.. the only thing you can do though is to change the stereotypes one at a time. Guess what if you do make small changes. they add up to big ones. TRUST ME. my parents and guy friends treat me totally different. because they know i can handle anything and i want to be treated as every man, becuase WE ARE THE SAME

It's a big question. Because for one thing a girl can pregnant a guy can't.
So people expect a girl to have more sense than a guy when comes to social behavior.

Because we keep buying into the "norm", the way it has been for a long time and continue to allow it.
