I'm not entirely sure that there was one, but I guess it could be that the war ends as he dies and at that point, the various relationships that were built sort of unravel and people go back to a changed world.

If it's anything like the book it's based on ("A Farewell to Arms"), the woman gives birth but dies, the baby dies, and the man walks away.

I don't think that there was one. This movie was boring.
