Memory is ones direct experience. History is either pictorial, written or verbal records of the past not directly experienced by the interpreter/reader.

If you can talk to someone who was at an event it is much more helpful than simply reading a book as you can see both facial expressions and vocal nuance that actually tell much more of a story than simple words alone. However do remember that memory is imperfect at best and the best way to interpret the past is to have a written account of something that was penned either during or immediately after an event and then bolster the written word with interviews of the people actually involved in the event.

Interpretation of the past is so incredibly difficult because we bring our own perceptions to the table every time we translate.
