don't know about the first bit!
i care about the other bit as it has a right to exist of its own accord.
who knows what and why life is.
to me it seem fairly important as its so diverse and in the natural system interdependent and stuff.
would also like to think a part of me will continue through my children. might be a end point somewhere and the mix of genes might be required

I won't be around for very long. The future of the world will be around for quite some time. You must be very self centerd if you don't care about the world's future.

Cause if you have kids you want the best for them, right? Even if you don't believe in what you said, your kids are still part of you so you do kind of live on. Makes sense to me. Besides, it's just selfish to use up the environment for our own good.
