one passed the earth this past weekend. It was 250,000 - 275,000 miles out, I think. That's a little farther away than the distance to the moon. The asteroid was about 1/2 mile wide.

To put it in perspective, scale it down to something you can visualize. Say the closest distance to the asteroid's path was one mile. On that scale, the earth was a little bigger than one half of an american high school's football field, and the asteroid would be about the size of the letter "O" in this paragraph.

If it hit, it would still make a big mess, but the odds were against that this time. However, nature keeps pitching 'em at us, and sooner or later, she'll put one across the plate.

There was an asteroid that past the earth on july 3 2006 that was supposed to be closer to us than the moon is.Guess we were lucky this time.

In the vastness of space how close does an asteroid have to be to be considered close? If it did not bounce off the atmosphere than no.

in the past its been hit a few times. recently there was a near miss a couple of days ago. Natures way of cleansing the planet for a new species.
