As far as consumption, the Japanese eat more tuna per capita than anywhere else in the world. As far as terrority, the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranian Sea are where the bluefin tuna spawns. Back in the 1980s, tuna for sushi was selling as much as $40 a pound for top quality. The price today is about $6 a pound. Since tonnage is an English form of weight, I think 2,200 American pounds, that would make a tonnage of tuna sell for $13,200, and a American ton for $12,000. Yet the tuna market fluctuates with the economic law of supply and demand. Therefore these figure could change overnight depending on the supply side of the equation. There will always be a demand.
