While these are now happening due to communications as indicated, their *history* actually goes further back, as noted here:
"Flash Crowd (Flash Mob): What you call a group of people who suddenly appear at an interesting location --
In this novella, Larry Niven explores some of the social consequences of having unlimited, cheap teleportation. One social consequence is that when millions of people see something interesting about a location on mass media, all of those who think "gee, I'd like to check that out" can get there in the blink of an eye.
At this point in the story, the Tonight Show has reported on an interesting ocean phenomenon at Hermosa Beach.
"...The next thing anyone knows, every man, woman and child in the country has decided that he wants to see the red tide at Hermosa Beach..."
"Another flash crowd. It figures," said Jerryberry. "You can get a flash crowd anywhere there are displacement booths."
From Flash Crowd, by Larry Niven.
Published by Fantasy And Science Fiction in 1972
Additional resources -
Displacement booths are the technology that allow teleportation to work. "
The future is today (well, almost).

A flash mob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly disperse. They are usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks.
The term has also been applied to distributed mobs, who use similar means to co-ordinate sudden large scale simultaneous actions in multiple locations. An example of such an action is the widespread use of mobile phones in the 2005 civil unrest in France to co-ordinate widespread social disruption.

a flash mob occurs when a big group of people meet, do something and then leave. Its a quick event maybe 10 minutes at the most and as far as i know it is not a violent thing. Its some form of protest, and can be quite intimidating i would guess.
the people all get notified via sms where to be and when... and they all show up.

This was going on about a year or so ago...a group of people would all organize in a specific place, not to protest or to cause any trouble whatsoever (right to assemble), but to go to a giant toy store and stare at an immense dinosaur display, then as quickly as they show up...they leave (thus the "flash" part). It sounds like fun, actually. I would imagine these are organized via email, but I haven't heard much about it lately.
