I think it's worth trying. I'd take the SAT instead of the ACT, but that might be my own bias. My perception is that the SAT is somewhat better regarded by top schools. I also like the idea of starting to take classes either at a Community College, or even at UVa itself. You can take classes without having formally entered a degree program. If you show that you are already succeeding at UVa courses, it seems hard for anyone to argue that you can't do it. Lastly, your chances of being accepted are higher if you are a resident of Virginia, since UVa is actually a public university.

Another option would be to take a good SAT prep class and do well on the test. The school would most definitely grant you a provisional accaptance, requiring you to maintain a minimal GPA through a set number of classes before full acceptance.

You should never shy away from applying. The worst that can happen is that you are rejected and you spend some cash on trying. Low cost in the scheme of life, and experiencing different forms of rejection is worth the pain in the long run as well.

You should be commended on your drive. Definitely go to school!!!

I would recommend you take the ACT if you haven't already. This will help you get into school. Also, just go and talk to someone in the admissions office, they will be glad to help you.
