We used milking machines, but if you want to milk a cow by hand here are a few tips. Make sure she is secured in a stanchion or with a halter. Give her some grain to keep her occupied. Wash her udder with nice clean warm water. This relaxes her and she will "let her milk down". When you wash her make sure the ends of her teats are cleaned well. Make yourself comfortable on a stool by the cow's udder. The first few squirts out of each teat aren't good because of possible bacteria still around the opening so those you can squirt them out on the floor or into a container to pour out later. After you've done that, take a container such as a sterilized stainless steel milk bucket and place that under the udder. You have to be aware that sometimes the cow will kick so you might have to move it quickly out of the way. Gently grasp two teats that are kitty-corner to each other by making a fist around them. Don't yank them but gently lift your fist slightly and squeeze at the same time. Don't do the hands together at the same time, but in a left, right, left, right cadence. When the two teats appear empty those two quarters of her udder, or bag, are done. Do the same with the other two. When you are finished you might want to wipe her teats again and dip them in a disinfectent. It's nice to tell the cow occassionally what a good girl she is or to pet her on her side when you are done. Cows also like soothing music! Good luck and remember practice makes perfect!

You're not bell ringing, never pull. In fact, push up slightly as you squeeze to support the udder and avoid pulling which causes mastitis.
Use this movement in one hand, then the other;
- Take hold of 2 teats.
- Squeeze together your thumb against your hand to prevent milk going back into the udder.
- Squeeze the first, second, third then little finger to express the milk and try to aim it into the bucket not up your nose.
- Relax your hand to let the teat fill up again.
