In the language of philosophy, a person has the following abilities:

Consciousness of self and non-self.
Values, aims, goals and the ability to pursue them.
Communication using language.
Awareness of having the above abilities and that there are other persons.

A person is not necessarily a human. Some believe there is a God who is a person. It is entirely possible that there are non-human beings, 'aliens', who are persons.
