I spray mine with oxiclean, let it soak for a few minutes, then sort of "wrap" the seatbelt in a wet cloth and wipe them off.

I am an auto mechanic and going to school for state inspection therfore I know it is completely legal to use the lap belts like they are but make sure you have your 8 year in a booster seat when in VA. That is a law here that they really stick to. I hope this helps, and have a great and safe trip.

I do that all the time! Just use a mild soap & water with a rag & wipe them down.
If they are really dirty you can use a hand held spot/steam cleaner which scrubs & pulls the dirt & water out. I got one at a local variety store for less than $40, worth the investment for any types of spots on carpet or furniture and great for the car!

Soap water and a rag. If really bad, test a hidden part of the strap using a little bleach water.

use a steam cleaner. like one of those personal ones you can get at a home depot or walmart. its just hand held and you dont have to use any kind of cleaner. the steam is so hot it will amaze you how well it cleans. i use one in my car (i have a toddler) and its awesome. use a towel and clean up the moisture and just look at how dirty your rag is, lol.

I've always used Armor-All. Then you can just pull it out more to clean.
