I really hate when people guess at this.
A machine slow down is usually caused by things clogging up your system.
Start with Spyware and Viruses.
Get and install and UPDATE and RUN REGULARLY a good Antivirus program. I use Macafee at work and at home with good results. There are many free ones on the net you can use, too.
Get and install and update and RUN WEEKLY the following programs. Adaware SE Personal, Spybot Search and Destroy (most current version) and Microsoft Defender. (These three are rated the highest when used as a team.)
Next, learn about a nifty Windows Utility.
Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup.
Use this to clean out all your extraneous files and downloads.
Lastly, run a defrag AFTER you've done all that.
Next, learn about MSconfig.
Start - Run - type msconfig[enter]
go go teh STart up Tab and examine each item listed there. These are things which run at startup. You can disable any which are obviuosly spyware and the like by unchecking the box.
You can learn about which processes are good by searching them out on this site: www.processlibrary.com
Of course, any GOOD process you do not want to disable.
i hope this helps.

Visit www.download.com and get these two anti-spyware software packages.
Ad-aware - search for ad-aware
SpyBot Search & Destroy - search for SPYBOT
Scroll down past the Sponsors, and click on the FREE version. Install and run these.
After a full scan from both of these, then check to see if your Anti-virus software is working. Get the updates, and run a full scan.
With Windows XP, go to the start menu, and pick RUN. Type in MSCONFIG and go. Click on the STARTUP section and uncheck anything that you do not need. Make sure that you do no uncheck your antivirus program, but just about everything else can go. Restart your computer and check your Anti-virus status.
Then consider adding more RAM. Check prices at http://www.coastmemory.com Look up your exact model.

Use it as a boat anchor!
No really take your HDD out of it and get a new system 3.6Ghz or something like that and quick.
If it has only just started happening try clening out your cookies and other temp internet stuff, if that doesn't work then make sure you haven't got an app setup to automatically update it's self because that will slow the whole thing down a LOT.

Well ,there may be many factors contributing to your slowness.Check if there are any unused soft wares,if any, uninstall them.Do not install beta soft-wares for they may not be stable.Clean the temporary files regularly. If suggestions above can't be of any help, you may need to reinstall your hardware drivers. If then still can't be satisfied, you may need to consult your computer manufacturer for more help.Good luck!

Is this recently? or in general?
It may be you have a virus or that your harddrive is nearly full. You should also consider a Disc Defragment.
