If the cactus is brown & mushy, it has rotted & is probably dead.

No need for water anymore.

If for some crazy reason you get another cactus & you want to keep it alive, it will need water. How much depends on many factors such as:
Is the plant actively growing or dormant?
Amount of light the plant receives.
Type of soil the plant is in.
Size of pot the plant is in.
Type of cactus - there are many different types & some need to be watered often, others need very little water.
etc etc etc

plant murderer! :)

Just as likely you watered it too much. A friend waters hers only when it rains in Phoenix, Arizona, and this works! Of course, you have to check their weather on the internet fairly often! Or just water them every two weeks, and don't drown them. If they are in a shallow cactus planter or tiny pot, there isn't mush dirt to get wet. Also: they need a lot of sunlight, that's what they are used to. You need a south-facing window, or a "grow light". You can put them outside in the summer, if the container has drain holes to let out excess rainwater. P.S. If it was potted up by an inexperienced gardener, it may not have had enough sand in the potting soil. So if you got a cutting or baby cactus from a friend, it needed special cactus soil mix.

My experience with cactus has been they die more from over-watering than from under-watering. Believe me, I've killed a bunch of them from trying to be "too nice" to them. They need a good light source -- and very very occasional water. But, if they turn mushy and fall over, I've always considered that a sign that I over-watered. (On the other hand, if they dry-up and wither and turn into a hard shriveled-up wad, I consider that to mean that I under-watered them!)

While Cacti can go long periods without water depending on the variety, they appreciate a good drinkr as well as any plant. They just don't like being cold and wet at the same time.

Are you sure it is dead? Try watering it a little, leave it alone and wait and see. There might still be some life in it deep down.

*sigh*

All life needs water. Even a cactus. It is just better at having very little. Why you think the desert isn't overgrowing with those plants if it was that easy for them? Cause it isn't.
