I am enjoying the coverage on The World Cup, but I don't understand all of the rules of the game. I see that France plays Italy on the 9th of July. Why is Germany playing Portugal on July 8th when they were both defeated this week?

Because both lost in semi-finals. Germany lost with italy 0-2. And we lost with France 0-1 (penalty in 1st half). Who wins will be 3rd place in WC!

This match will decide who comes 3rd and who comes 4th. As you know from most sports theres always the gold medal, silver medal and bronze medal (1st, 2nd, 3rd) so they always have a game to see who gets the 3rd place for the "imaginary" medal. They don't get a medal, but get an increased money-prize.

because they are competing for 3rd place...since they got the farthest out of all the other teams that lost, they have to face each other in a final game to see who will go home with 3rd place in the world cup...

They are both scrambling for third place. That's one position nobody will remember after the world cup. It doesn't matter who wins, cuz even the winner is not going to be happy about being third.

They are playing for third place. It is like a consolation game, but it is to show who is the best out of the supposed losers of the semifinals.
