We live in Phoenix and vacationed in Tucson this year. It was great! I suggest buying a Frommer's guide for Arizona. They are around $14 and list all sorts of attractions with price, directions, suggestions, etc. We always buy one in advance of a vacation and mark off things we'd like to see to make a basic plan.

The biggest thing to see in AZ is the Grand Canyon, which is about 5 hours north of Phoenix. You can take a trip into Mexico via Nogales, which is about 4 hours south of Phoenix.

As far as lodging, Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, Payson, and Prescott are large enough to have variety of prices and quality. Go for a chain you trust.

There are a gagillion things to do in this state but some things you can do here and nowhere else:

Desert Sonoran Museum (Tucson)
Pima Air and Space Museum (Tucson)
Grand Canyon
Taliesin West (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Scottsdale)
Pink Jeep Tours into the desert
Montezumas Castle--ancient Indian ruins north of Phoenix about an hour

Out of Africa is the cat sanctuary referred to above. The owners raise all types of big cats. They have recently moved to a more spacious park in Camp Verde, Arizona about an hour north of Phoenix. I highly recommend this park if you are visiting around September through April. It is much too hot for any outdoor activity except swimming this time of year.

Another great place is the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum on the north end of Tucson. There you will see all the plants and animals of the desert.

I also recommend the Hilton Pointe South Mountain resort, with its own waterpark, golf, tennis, horseback riding and great restaurants. Don't miss Rustler's Rooste for dinner in a cowboy atmosphere, with a bovine mascot to greet you at the front door and great views of Phoenix.

The Arizona Museum for Youth is a good indoor place to take the kids, as is Makutu's Island, an indoor playground.

To truly enjoy the beauty of Arizona you should visit in the fall, winter or spring. The very best time is April, when the cactuses are blooming.

There is a water park called Big Surf and there is the Phoenix Zoo and Science Center. They have a thing going on called Animal Grossology which kids love and can learn from. There is a place called Amazing Jakes in Gilert which is right outside of Phoenix. It is a all u can eat pizza/ pasta buffet with bowling, go karts, games and a couple rides. I could be entertainment for hours. There is a hotel/resort called Pointe at South Mountain. It is very nice and in a good part of town. It has a waterpark there also. Check out the reviews here http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g31310-d112178-Reviews-Pointe_South_Mountain_Resort-Phoenix_Arizona.html
One more thing, it is very hot here and many hotels are running promotions so look on the website and check for that. I would stay away from Tucson. Good Luck, Hope I helped.

Some basic issues need to be addressed(I am Owner of a Travel Agency):

1-Do you have a Travel Budget?
2-Are you looking to explore the entire State of Arizona? Just certain parts of AZ?
3-When do you plan on taking this journey to AZ?
4-Length of trip?

Once those minor details have been resolved, it makes it much easier to plan a trip. If you could kindly either call, email me at: indysteve1563@yahoo.com, or reach me through Yahoo Messenger with your proposed Travel itinerary, we can discuss what is doable and realistic, both time-wise and cost-wise.

Slide Rock State Park in Sedona, AZ is just south of Flagstaff.
There is also a big cat sanctuary open to the public just north of Phoenix. It's wonderful, too.

if you go to the grand canyon, take the train. it will keep the kids entertained for the long ride! there are a lot of water parks since it is sooo hot! if you go down south (tucson area) there are a lot of old mining town areas they might enjoy. it is also nice to go out on one of the many manmade lakes and enjoy the view of the desert! sedona, which is a new age-y artsy town might be nice, too! and the four corners is really cool!
