Because Laurence Maroney was easily the second best back in the draft. The combination of decent size with break away speed is a potent threat. De'Angelo Williams played for Memphis in Conference USA, he put up great numbers sure, but the teams he played against were not nearly of the level of the Big Ten(eleven). The only thing I would be hesitant about Maroney for would be the injury he suffered this last season.

I think the Pats approached Maroney as a more versatile back with homerun speed, a gear that Williams doesn't have. The Pats use a variety of formations, and Maroney could be put all over the field. Williams is a strong runner between the tackles, but maybe not the best fit for a pass-oriented team.

Maroney played behind a great OL at Minnesota so that can be attributed to his success in the Big Ten. I prefer Williams as a cutback RB with great vision and obvious cutback ability. He reminds me of Clinton Portis a bit but less of a threat to take it down field. Both are sketchy blockers, but the edge goes to DeAngelo.

In a pass-oriented offense, I guess they wanted an RB who was a fair reciever. Maroney ain't a great reciever but he still has pretty decent hands. He also has more explosion and is a threat to take it long anytime. Maroney is also a bit more fresh than Williams, as Laurence has a good past (no injuries) and started later into his collegiate career.

its true DeAngelo Williams did have really good #'s, but look at the teams he faced! The patriots took Maroney because he had good #'s, even though they werent better than Williams, and because he played in a TOUGH division. That is the main reason why they took him, the opponents he faced were the closest to the ones he will face in the nfl and he still did well.
