Julie, if I were you I'd go with a wall unit A/C.... I am an A/C tech and have an 18K BTU that cools my house down and its on a timer... I'll tell you Cetral A/C systems get nasty and moldy.. Most of the public has never seen the mold that grows in those dank, dark spaces in the duct work.. Thats why we have so many allergies... Benefits of Wall unit: Can be cleaned by homeowner / Very inexpensive / when it breaks, (after 12 years)throw it away and buy a new one.. WALL UNITS ARE BEST!!!

I am searching for the same information and have yet to find a definitive answer. I can tell you that Consumer Reports will NOT give you the answer (I paid for their website only to find it was money wasted).

Here is what I have found thus far...

- Everyone agrees that Trane are the best. But, you pay for that reputation.

- General agreement that York are bad.

- Bryant/Carrier (they are the same company) get generally good reviews, but aren't as good as Trane.

- Goodmans gets mixed reviews. The sense I get is that they had a very bad reputation, but are working to change that.
