free trade means the borders of the country are open for products from outside of the country. If imported items are better than local products, the market is full of people buying the imported products.
Protection is when the government steps in and usually through taxes and import duties makes the imported products more expensive than the local product.

Protectionism is imposing tariffs on foreign goods. Some argue that it's necessary to place tarriffs (taxes on foreign goods), because foreign goods are able to be made at cheaper costs (because the standard of living in other countries is poorer). If they didn't place this tax, the foreign made item could be sold at a lower price, because the cost to make it in another country would be so much cheaper. Since the foreign product can be made cheaper (and therefore sold at cheaper prices), Americans would buy only the foreign good, and not the American product, and American jobs would be lost. So to ensure that Americans still have jobs, these taxes are imposed on foreign goods to keep the market fair.
People who are for free trade want to get rid of these restrictions. These are advocates for a world-economy and think that it is unfair to restrict economies to a country-by-country basis. They argue that with changing technology, the world is shaping into a world based economy, and placing these tarrifs would slow this progress. They also believe that these taxes are unfair, and argue that the government shouldn't interfere in an economic system, because the power of capitalism will work itself out naturally.
Another argument against tarrifs is the reaction from the other country it is imposed on. Some argue that by taxing goods on a country, they will in turn tax our goods, and that slows economic progress as well. This is why we have free trade agreements with many countries.
