This might not the answer you seek. A disease of wheat (i would suggest a fungus or a rust) was an ergot that was used later in the 20th century as a primary ingredient as LSD-25. The thing is i think it stopped a war...or battle..around Alexander The Great's time....no-one wanted to fight the next day...Eat your crusts!!!!

i think it would be the wheel, its got all those uses and so on
or perhaps the axel, i guess a wheel is pretty useless without an axel
