These questions always make me laugh a bit on the inside, since most folks won't go back beyond 1975 to find great athletes. A sad commentary on our lack of knowledge of our sports (or any other) history...
All-time athlete would have to be Jim Thorpe, who won Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon, played college and pro football, played in the MLB and played a bit of basketball. The original all-around man...

Jim thorpe was by far the best athlete of all time. He thrived on a profesional level of every sport he played. Basketball, Football, Rugby, and Soccer.
