In a perfect world, my dear friend, if a referee were proven guilty of favoring a team, he would have to be stoned to death by the players of the affected team. Or, if you don't want to be that harsh, they could just be thrown to the lions. Now, in this world, claims and accusations about referees leaning towards a certain team, seldom, if ever, evolve into real investigations. FIFA never admits such incidents; the only thing they do is grade referees' performance in each game through a systems of punctuation according to physical condition and application of football laws of the game. But that is about it. Should a ref get a low grade, he would get a short suspension or when worse comes to worse, he would be sent to lower leagues only to be reinstated a few games later. That is, sadly, the current state of affairs.

In my opinion, refs should be barred from football for good if it is proven that they acted in bad faith.

All they do is pick a "fairer" ref for the next round, while the naughty ref gets a suspension. If your team got screwed by the referees, they're still going home and that WC will go down in history as yet another dirty Cup, by the losing sides and the neutral parties. (The winners will conveniently forget that they won because they played with 12 men.)

I keep hearing that FIFA is corrupt, that they themselves favor teams, etc.; however, I think the example of the match between Portugal and the Netherlands is a valid example of it having been perceived that the officiating was just bad in general - not that it particularly favored one team or the other. FIFA said something that day or the following - at least to the other referees officiating games because suddenly thee was a dramatic decline in the number of cards issued and in case no one has noticed, you haven't seen or heard anything more of Valentin Ivanov.

And how will you prove that? And even if they do that, there is no way that the score could be reversed. And why the team that was favored should be punished? They didn't blow the whistle, the referee did.

It can NEVER be proven because nothing about what would be relevant is accessible by the public. The thing is that lack of ability to prove it does not mean that it is not going on. --- IT IS GOING ON !!!!
