It seems due to the defacit republicans are anything but conservative . As for the liberal or Democrats seem to push harder for balancing the budget . I may be wrong but I see conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans . I would love to see these two childish name callings on both sides go away . I think it would be a good start to cooperation . Then we could work on the first grade mentality of name calling and bashing . The leaders of this great country , I assume have at least completed grade one . An argument becomes pointless when name calling begins . This is usualy an admission that the argument was lost !!

Probably because there are like people like me, who are conservative and vote issues, not just randomly follow party lines. It has become the latest thing to say that you are not democratic or republican but rather conservative or liberal because it reduces the stigma of being a party lapdog, unable to think, just react as the party told you.

There are few who are truly conservative or liberal, but as you mentioned, most really follow the party. But now that everyone is doing it the meaning is lost and conservative and liberal have become synonymous with republican or democratic, although they really are not.

Back in the old days there were quite a few conservative democrats, but now its hard to get a party nod unless you espouse all of the party dogma.

I think the definition of Conservative has changed from, keep thing the way they are to religious. Liberalism which means making change, is carried out by raising taxes and spending. The higher your taxes, the more socialist your government is. The lower your taxes the more capitalist your government is. If you ever get to a point of 100% taxes then you live in a pure socialist society. Typically over the last 20 years republicans have lowered the highest tax bracket by 4% and Democrats have raised it back up. It hovers between 35 and 39 percent. So on that note I'd call Democrats the socialist party.

Democrats are typically liberal.
Republicans are typically conservative.
These are not rules, however I think you would be very hard pressed to find Socialist republicans and Conservative democrats.
Your statement is like saying that calling the Pope Catholic (versus just Christian) is bad.
I personally like the fact that politicians waste time with playground antics. It leaves less time for them to pass stupid laws and infringe upon liberty.

Because we have become a country of absolutes. Everyone forgets about the moderates in each party, whom I believe (since I am one of them) usually stand for the best of both liberalism and conservativism. Someone who doesn't want to kill every criminal on the planet, but who also doesn't want to just slap them on the hand, either.
