A baby can show up in an ultrasound at early stages of pregnancy but the first ultrasound usually isn't requested before the 12th week of pregnancy. This is to confirm that everything is ok with the baby & determines how many babies you are carrying so the nursing staff know what to expect & look for eg: 1 or 2 heart beats & etc.

An embryo can be seen on transvaginal ultrasound by week 5-6. By week 7-8, it can be seen transabdominally. This is the best time to get an accurate due date. In order to do an organ survey on a fetus or determine the sex, the best time to do an ultrasound is around week 18-22.

Babies can be seen at only a few weeks though they don't look human yet. By 12 weeks, sex can be determined (though it's rare that early). Most ultrasounds are done at 16-24 weeks to check for problems and fetal development. It's also pretty easy to tell the sex at that point.

To really see the baby good it takes about 19 weeks. I think you can see the baby as early as 3 months. I don't know for sure.

I had my first ultrasound at ten weeks but it was done transvaginally. Most doctors will wait until 20 weeks to do one unless, like in my case, there were concerns with the pregnancy. Good Luck.

I have been told that the best time to have an ultrasound is when you are around 20 weeks that is when you can begin to tell the sex of your child.

I saw mine the first time at 8 weeks. It was a very small bubble. At 16 weeks, the legs and arms are there, hands and feet, etc. it's really neat then.
