There are several generations of the Pentium processor. the seventh- generation Pentium processor is the Pentium 4 made by Intel corp. Athlon processors are what they call third party ( or non Intel chipsets) processors. Each has it's merit. The Intel corp has been at it a little longer. AMD athlon 760 chipsets include features such as dual processor support, PCI 2.2 bus with up to six masters, AGP 2.0 interface that supports 4x mode, supports a max of 2GB buffered or 4 GB registed DDR SDRAM.
Both of the processors are competing for the same market which is speed.
The programs that control the processors full capabilities are not up to date but should be soon.
I took a AMD 64 Athlon over a P4 Intel because of the media functions.

It really depends on what you need it for. If you want it for gaming or surfing the Internet and simple Office tasks (MSWord, MSPowerPoint), get AMD. If you want the computer for multimedia applications like video/audio encoding or 3D modelling, go for Intel.

Then again, get what best suits your budget.

Like nearly everything that has to do with computer systems it all depends on what you want to use your system for.

One is better for some things while the other is better for other things and sometimes they are both as good as each other.
