I am going to be working downtown on by the corner of Santa Clara and 12th streets. We want to have internet and have heard that there may be wi-fi access in the area.
How would I detect it and what equipment would I need to have?

Check out Yahoo Maps, enter your location, and select the Wi-Fi option. That will show you who has the Wi-Fi hot spot for the area, then just contact them and see what you need.

Turn on wireless on your PC and see which Access Points you can detect. Many will be password/encrypted but some may be open and accessible.

Also try Wigle.net... used to show wifi access points

Go here

Also, go to any Starbucks and they have T-mobile access, and if you see me there say hi. McDonalds also has access for $2.95 for 2 hours but it's slower than T-Mobile's.
