You may want to consider retrofitting it to operate with the newer R134a refrigerant. It is much easier to find and cheaper.

Your question suggests you simply want to add R12 to get your AC to work.
First off R12 is very expensive and if your system is low on freon there is a leak somewhere. Freon does not get used up, it literally lasts indefinitely.
Charging a leaking system will simply leak into the atmosphere which is bad for the ozone. So you will want to have your system diagnosed to find out what is leaking. If it is an expensive part, it could cost you more than the car is worth. You will need to call around to find a shop that actually has R12. It's not that scarce but a growing number of shops don't carry it anymore.

Unless you are a certified mechanic yourself, don't! R12 isn't very common anymore and most shops don't even carry it. If your system has the R134A in it, then it would be better to keep it that way. R12 does cool better but it doesn't equal out in the long run. The mechanic can check your system for leaks and put the proper refrigerant back in the car.

As mentioned before, recharging an ac with R-12 is no longer a backyard mechanic option. It's very expensive, plus you must be certified to buy it or work with it. You also need specialty tools and instruments and know how to use them to.

Last I heard, the penalty for releasing CFC's into the atmosphere was $25,000 for each offense.

Go to your local mechanic...It will be expensive...but he should be able to do it.
