I studied the causes of hunger a few years ago. I got past the "surface" issues of crop failures, desertification, and war. What began to emerge was quite simply a lack of individual opportunity. Where barriers are set up that limit expressions of initiative, creativity, education, growth, and development, hunger results. Hunger and despair are the handmaidens of violence. Go to the source of the barriers and you are staring at the enemy.

Certainly, fundamentalist religious hegemony is a factor in some parts of the world. Iran is an interesting country right now, because in many ways it's a pluralist society, with a younger generation that digs rock music and thinks many of the ruling politicians and clergy are crazy. (Reminds me of another country.)

What does "development aid," if you will, look like in those countries? On the "NOT" list: invading and occupying the country; making veiled threats of military attack; making development deals that include closing our eyes to nuclear weapons development; supporting the regimes of anti-democratic military leaders, while closing our eyes to poor or non-existent efforts to root out terrorists within their borders.

On the "DO" list: support for NGO (non-governmental organizations) that focus on grass-roots development; support for micro-development loans or funding for very small businesses and development projects (pumps, wells, etc.). We need a reform in our leadership in the US that is less one-dimensional in seeing foreign relations as the pursuit of "US interests" (oil and, let's see, what else?) and respects and supports international laws and treaties on human rights and the environment.
