None of the band members survived the sinking, and there has been much speculation about what their last song was. Some witnesses said the final song played was the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee."

However, there are three versions of this song in existence and no one really knows which version, if any, was played. Hartley reportedly said to a friend if he was on a sinking ship "Nearer, My God, to Thee" would be one of the songs he would play.

Walter Lord’s book A Night to Remember popularised wireless operator Harold Bride’s account that he heard the song "Autumn" before the ship sank.
It is considered Bride either meant the hymn called "Autumn" or "Songe d'Automne," a popular ragtime song of the time. Others claimed they heard "Roll out the Barrel."

Like most eyewitness testimony, there's actually less consensus than popular histories/movies would lead one to believe. In the terror and confusion, most survivors were aware of the band but didn't really pay attention to what.
Most Titanic researchers believe that "Autumn" was the last song played, which does have some similarity to "Nearer My God to Thee". The story about the songs and band were reported in the newspapers, which at the time were not too careful about fact checking. "Nearer My God to Thee" sounds more romantic/Anglo-Saxon Christian, and as such would appeal to a Victorian audience.

Ever since the Titanic went down there has been controversy about exactly which musical selections were played by the ship's gallant bandsmen that night. Legend has always had it that - after playing ragtime to bolster the passengers' spirits - the bandsmen played "Nearer My God, To Thee" in the final moments before the great vessel foundered.

My Great Great Grandfather was the drummer the band. They said that he wasn't a very good drummer, but he always went down well.
