During the Crimean War the Commander in Chief, Lord Raglan, wanted the Earl of Cardigan to deploy his light dragoons to protect a British artillery position threatened by Russian Infantry. From where Raglan was sitting the artillery was directly in front of him so he ordered Cardigan to "advance rapidly to the front", the trouble was that from where Cardigan was positioned the artillery was to his flank-front, to HIS front was an entrenched Russian artillery position. Cardigan followed orders, the Light Brigade charged the wrong way, and the rest, as they say, is history.
