scientists are not exactly sure why, but the theory is that as you drift off, your body goes through some physiological changes to prepare for a few hours of restoration. Your breathing rate changes. Your temperature may change. And your muscle tone changes, too. Hypnic jerks, the theory goes, may just be a byproduct of that muscular transition

The best answer in my opinion is your body is falling asleep before you are. This cause you to jump like if you was coming out of some sort of in-volunteer fainting. It's quit scary, like if you went with it you feel like your would die because you loose control of your body. it's quick but quit intense. but its just your brain keeping your body from sleep walking while you dream or not. i would suggest changing you sleep position. or put you body in that position that you know would keep you from this heart pumping scary experience.

Im not sure what it means but my best guess would be that it is your body transitioning to the sleep phase but somewhere in that phase you have a dream with a sudden action that causes an actual movement. Whatever the scientific meaning of it is, its hilarious sometimes! Ive done that PLENTY of times & crack myself up everytime!

LOL...I know what you mean! My right leg jerks every night as I drift off to sleep. I'm not sure what causes it, but I've done it for as long as I can remember. My son also does it. That's how I know when he's really in a deep sleep :0)

You are trying to come out of your body. It is called astral projection and everybody does it. It also happens when you have that dream that you are falling. You are probably coming back in to your body. Just go with it and it will be all right.

I get that too sometimes. Really annoying, esp. the "jump" thing. It must have something to do with the transition to rest mode. I don't know the science behind it though.

It's actually a min epileptic fit (or at least of the same nature) but it doesn't imply you have epilepsy.

You can enjoy it or hate it. Your choice buts its more enjoyable to savour the weird sensation.

just muscle spasms. it's not anything serious. no worries. :) if you have some awful thing t hough then get it checked by a dr. but if it's only once in a while...not anything to worry about, hon. happens to me too. means you're over-tired.
