Ethics...what is good, what is bad...I think ethics have been here ever since humans live. The earliest humans also had their idea of what was good and bad. So they had ethics...probably not very comlex, but they did have them
Adam and Eve eat from the forbidden fruit. After they ate it, they could tell right from wrong, so according to the Bible, we've had ethics from then

There is no ethics amongst animals, (and all beings other than humans).
Only human beings are capable of 'self' awareness, and out of a deep understanding of this awareness, coupled with experience of life, humans attempt to conceptualise a code or 'ethics' which should serve preservation, and furtherance of human life to its fullest capabilities. So each adds his experience to improve these ethics. Every true religion, society, culture, etc, has been adhering to this concept. Any deviation from this purpose causes chaos , trouble, confusion , discord, dis-harmony to that extent.
So, this process started with evolution of humans, though in a very small and humble way.
What we mean by 'ethics' is a sort of self-restraint, to contain the 'beast' like natural urge in us, for the sake of fulfilling a higher purpose (of understanding the true purpose of life, and to explore the possibilities of experiencing and enhancing awareness of deeper levels of consciousness).

Start with Nietzsche's "Towards a Genealogy of Morals" (sometimes deceptively called "The Genealogy of Morals" - it is, however, only a preliminary work).
