I have always loved Indian culture and am always learning more. I have been to a sikh temple with a good friend of mine before she went on vacation back in India and we lost contact.

Another good ONLINE friend on mine, keeps telling me how pretty I'd look in a Saree. Problem is the only Indian clothes I've warn before was the long tunic/pants and head wrap I wore to the temple. I borrowed it from my old friend.

We have a LARGE Indian community here in my part of the "westurn world" And I was wondering the following:

What exactly do I look for in a GOOD saree?
How do I put one on? *as silly as it sounds*
Is it traditional to go barefoot? Or can I wear sandals?
How do you wash them?
Any suggestions for fabric/design?
Any other information I need to know?

Picking out a good saree is like picking out any good dress, it all depends on what you prefer. Keep these points in mind before you buy a saree from a reputable saree shop. What is your preference?

-A heavily embroidered or 'zari work' saree that's apt for a wedding occassion OR one that has light work on it (like embroidery just around the border/edges and few sprays of beads and crystals elsewhere)?

-What kind of colour do you like and what compliments your skin tone the best; bright or pastel, shaded or monotone?

There are so many different kinds of sarees, produced from different states in India. For instance, the classic white and gold or red and gold South Indian temple saree, Benarsi silks from Varanasi, Paithanis, Patolas, Ikkat etc. Its only once you see it all, you will know which one you fancy the best.

These days designer designer sarees are very popular, they are usually embroidered sarees in chiffon, georgette or crepe silk , that may have surface ornamentation, some or no texturing, hand painted, glass and bead trimings around the 'palav' (the part of the drape which hangs loose on your shoulder) . Most Indian designers come out with their own signature embroidery. Check out http://www.ritukumar.com/ritukumar_subsection.htm for idea sake

Please don't go barefoot, a nice high heeled sandal or stilletoe looks perfect under the saree.

You would need to learn how to drape it from an Indian. Ask the shop assistent to teach you or get hold of an Indian friend. :) Also you would have to get a blouse and petticoat (under slip that hold the drape) made from a tailor or dress maker.

Do not wash sarees, unless they are daily wear cottons, don't bother. Am sure you are not gonna buy a daily wear saree, so be cool. Just wrap it up in a muslim cloth keep it aside in your wardrobe, do not hang.

Lastly, if you are on the plump side, a flowy fabric like chiffon or georgette will look the best instead stiff silk sarees.

Choosing the Right Sari for the Occasion

Something you must keep in mind when choosing a sari is where you intend to wear it. The type of fabric, color, design or pattern, and embroidery are all important considerations. Just like it would be appropriate to wear chiffon or silk to a formal event, and cotton during the day, when dressing in western clothing the same goes for wearing a sari. If you're buying a sari to wear to a festival or wedding ceremony, a traditional silk sari is a good choice. For a wedding reception, chiffon, georgette or net saris are popular, with plenty of embroidery and bling! The cut of the blouse also varies. The blouse for an evening wear sari will have shorter sleeves and will be low cut at the back.

You Should Be Careful of When Buying a Sari

Lots of places offer imitation saris with copies of Kanjeevaram and other patterns. The most important thing to check is the quality of the silk and zari in the sari. On initial inspection, the silk may feel thick and glossy near the pallu but inside the sari, you may find that it’s half the thickness! Manufacturers of lesser quality saris use two-ply silk instead of three-ply for weaving, and fake gold thread for the zari work.

The zari used for a Kanjeevaram sari is a silk thread covered with flattened silver in the center, and gold on the outer surface. To test whether the zari is fake, scratch or scrape it and if red silk doesn't emerge from the core, the sari is not a true Kanjeevaram sari. In addition, the border, body and pallu of a genuine Kanjeevaram silk sari are woven separately, and then interlocked together.

A good saree is one which suits your wish and fashion and hide your nakedness. So it is advisable to buy one from your husband who select it without your advice or help from the shop.

go into a store that sells them, you will find that store in the Indian community and ask questions they may have more than one store, so ask around, have them help you fit it, sandals are fine if outdoors, look around and learn from others
