Why would you need a hammer if you did not have a nail?

Early man used bone and wood to pin things together. At some time this would have been difficult and a rock would have been used. But that is just a blunt object not a hammer.

In time the bone and wood were joined by bronze and nails were made. They then made a mallet type of instrument that evolved into a hammer.

I'd say nail came first because in order to put something together the nail had to be invented and then the hammer needed to be invented to use the nail.

The hammer did. It was used along with a chisel to creat different types of joints, soon the wooden peg was invented followed by cast nails, then cut nails and now finally wire nails. I watch way too much discovery channel.

i'd say the hammer. The nail that sticks out gets hammered. So obviously, if you had no hammer then you wouldn't have anything to hit it with. (unless you have a solid object around you)

The nail....people just used to use rocks and other improvised hammers to drive spikes. But then one day, a smart guy invented a very efficient and sleek device to drive nails--a "hammer".
