Stephen Hawking follows in the same tradition of intelligent people as Einstein.
They really could care less about posturing (making a point or a face) than they are about just using their heads to solve an issue.
They spend all their lives with way too much interest and compassion and mathematics to be concerned about the ignorance of the public except to elevate some education so people could actually share information and learning at a better understanding.
He just wants to talk.
I think he genuinely cares about what people think so he can get an idea of what the people who speak up (vocal audience) will think, say and/or do simply because to a smart guy, those are the people who are going to have an effect on what's now and the future.
When you spend your days dreaming in general and also on theoretical mathematics and being a hard core Trekkie to boot; it becomes a moot point angle to cast judgement on any group of people.
"Hawkings and Einstiens" are the alternative counterparts to "Mengeles and Frankenstiens." They are the ones who achieve the epiphanie that if you must be intelligent, you may as well be compassionate and kind because really, camraderie of true communication is the only way for intellects to evolve and continue growing, learning, and having a good time.
Meaning: people who use big brains for the sake of the world realized a long time ago that there are two ways to be a genius: psychotic, and compassionate, and it's the kind ones who can talk freely with each other and have fun with increased brainpower, and with that, comes the realization that there's a great need to care about the world.
That's really all they care about, that, and having just something better for the world.
Besides, what would you do/be like if all you spent your time on was at a university with a chalkboard as your portal to another reality, with 160+ I.Q. points as your key?
Most of mine is dormant, but with an operative of 134-144, I can guess a bit what it's like up there.

I believe this is a serious question. If we don't have a plan or nature does not take a course then we will not survive.
Somehow this over breeding of population has to stop. eg bird flu, the Chinese way of one child only, put somethiong in the water where over breeding takes place. The world will not make it with the population growth as it is and I think it is the basic cause of problems to day, polution, starvation, high costs. there is only so much to go around. To encourage breeding as some religions do is irresponsible and they obviously do not care about the poverty it causes.

Does it matter what he was looking for? The question is valid, the pot is boiling, the frogs are dying, and if we don't find another way to live soon the question will answer it's self.

I think that the question was meant to inspire thought, which seems to be less and less prevalent as time progresses.
