Ever look at old wedding photos and laugh at the fashion at the time? You think to yourself "what on earth were they thinking when they chose that outfit?"
What I suggest you do is look at old magazines and try to find a timeless outfit. If it still looks good after 20 years you will look good too and not regret it.
Avoid trends. If you want to still have a bit of current fashion, use accessories instead.
The following images are a pretty 1920's dress and a pic of Audrey Hepburn just some examples of how classic still looks good. If all else fails, go for a silk.

I got married in a black leather skirt, pink leather jacket and knee high black boots! I got the skirt cheap as I told the shopkeeper I was getting married in it, the jacket came from TKMAXX and the boots were on sale in Debenhams. So the whole outfit cost about £120! My husband was very impressed! And I still wear the clothes now (4 1/2 years later).
Then for the muslim part of the wedding I wore a beautiful red saree and lots of gold. The saree was so comfortable and I was relaxed about eating because it wasn't tight. You can get them from 'asian' clothes shops. It was cheap, again, about £60.

If black isn't offensive to the bride and groom, have a bare shoulder knee length simple dress. If you want to dress it up, accessorize with a nice shawl, pearls or brooch. Use nice dangling earrings that frame your face well. If the earrings are big, skip the necklace. If you're wearing a nice neck piece, use stud earrings. Shoes are important, too! The shoes and accessories can help you make your look hip, casual, or classic.
A bare shoulder dress or a sheath dress is a good investment because you can wear them over and over again. Just change the accessories that you wear with it.

I bought a trouser suit with a matching basque which I have worn several times since, I had a fake flower corsage on the suit jacket to make it more suitable for a wedding which I took off afterwards and a pair of sandals I have worn since. Instead of a jacket you could substitute a nice pashmina or shrug?

A little sexy but smart just above the knee dress in a colour that suits your skin tone with a shawl draped over your arms for when it's chilly! Shawl can e used as a scarf in winter and a wrap in summer and a sexy but smart dress can be used for work or for a night out, just sexy-up your 'do to go from work girl to party animal! hey, presto!!

go for a nice light colour skirt, just below the knee, one that goes with white, like pale colours or beige. maybe with a stitch detail on it.
Then get a plain white top, camisole or something, not a shirt though.
for your feet, have those really smart flip flops, i don't mean plastic beach ones, the one's that look ethnic stlyed. in a shade of brown.
you'll look great and be able to wear all summer!
Mix and match with other things then!

Go to Coast- they have lovely things that would be special enough for a wedding (lots of corset type tops, lovely dresses and skirts) but that you would definitely wear again.
There's a Coast in Debenhams but they have their own shops too.

How about a suit, a more evening style one? Then you could just change the top you wear under it for different occasions.
