I noticed this recently and wondered. What qualifications do they need? Fine Art? Graphics? Art History?

It's just a fancy name for sandwich maker. It implies more focus on the act of putting a sandwich together. Many places come up with fancy names for employees to make the job sound interesting and important.

I once was a "Sandwich Artist" and I needed no qualifications or artistic experience to have this "artsy" job. I simply applied for it and learned how to make sandwiches.

I think like most companies it's always a fun and motivating notion to give such a prestigious-sounding title such as some departments stores call their sales associates "partners". Or phone operators are now called "Customer Service Specialists". Or a person in the legal field may be called a "legal assistant or administrative assistant" instead of a file clerk.

The "Sandwich Artist" concept has been around for years....at least since 1998 when I used to work there.

My friend applied to be a sandwich artist at subway and he is qualified in graphics and art history (it was a stopgap by the way!) and got turned down.
But starbucks were happy to take him on.
