Interesting...
1.) When was your house originally built? Assuming the pots were laid there during construction, this can give you an indication to their age.
2.) What part of the world are you in? Are their local customs that might explain this?
3.) Do the pots have any markings? ( Be sure to look on the bottoms )
4.) AFTER researching the above questions, is their a nearby University where you could consult a knowledgeable person?

Well according to a witch I know, it all depends on how they were placed, was there anything in them and what pots they were.
Two things of vital importance though:
If they were placed the right way up - good sign.
If they were placed upside down - VERY bad sign.
Apparently there are several reasons for pots like these (I'm only mentioning the good ones) - to encourage wealth, to trap any evil that might enter the house, as a protection spell, and several more that I can't remember.
If you're a non-believer it doesn't really matter either way.

Well, those earthenware pots are already priceless. It's part of the beliefs of the people who lived there to put those pots for prosperity. Like the ones that was practiced by my ancestors. Instead of pots, they placed silver coins 4 feet below the ground for the future generation's sake.

Many Wiccans place "spells" on the entry way to thier homes there are many reasons for this as well. Protection, health, and harmony being most prominant. The jars most likely contained herbs and salts. Some voodoo religions woiuld place jars under thier entry way to "catch" bad spirits when they "washed the steps" each morning to "wash away the bad spirits who came prowling the night" If the jars are upside down they may have been placed to keep "bad spirits" in the home. Somecultures would do this ifthe person living in the home was beleived to have been evil. This is known in Wiccan as "binding one from harm to others".

In days of old builders used to put tokens into the fabric of the house usally under the floor boards or under lintels and in chimnney breast for good luck . Apparently its not unusual to find dead cats for some reason not so lucky for the cats. I think this was all to do with good luck and that sort of mumbo jumbo but not to certain. so i assume you pots where to do with somthing similar eg besause they were there you will always have foof finance and fire. Of course this colud be all total nonsense im only guessing

There are several possible answers. One being it was buried there by accident and just Happened to be under the door mantel.
The next one is that some American Indians had a ritual of burying the foreskin of their male children under their door mantel to assure they would always return home.
Another one is that some cultures believed that placing a pot/dish with grain in it at your entrance assured you would always have food to provide for visitors.

I think they are very old/ancient. If you feel superstitious then put them back. Or if you don't believe in such things then sell them .Many people are ready to pay large amounts for antics.
