An ancient custom called the passing of the shoe, the marriage is not complete with out the father of the bride, passing the shoe that is worn by the bride on that day to the groom. They used to do this with the shoe full of wine.

On my wedding day my father in law did it and not many people knew about it, he did not fill with wine though as the wife needed to wear it

UK ancient tradition

US - this was just a local custom in our area, ot common throughout the US....

THE BRIBE TO ELOPE
This was more serious than a custom. The Bride's father (sometimes in conjunction with the Groom's father) offer the couple a bribe to elope. The bribe is typically the cost of the wedding plus a few bucks for their time and other expenses. The new couple is given the option of a large wedding or eloping and having a fair hunk of change to get started on their own with.

Side note:
I know of nobody who took the bribe.

In Israel many people have the custom that the bride circles the groom under the wedding canopy 7 times. During this time the groom prays for the future of there marriage and offspring. It represents that they are becoming unified in all seven of the upper realms. There is also a custom that the bride and groom don't have anything in there pockets during the ceremony to show that there not getting married for any superficial reasons (like money).

well, not so much a custom, but here in the Philippines, there's this thing about the couple after the wedding will dance, so that the guests and visitors can pin money to their dress (as in money...paper money, the bigger the amount, the oolaahh you are coz everybody will see you pinning it..)

well, that's aside from the gift you would bring, huh?

and.... when you made your reception at the province.... well, you have to be prepared to feed the WHOLE TOWN!!! hahaha.. that's how close our ties here.. :P

I'm from India but I've never heard of anything like this before
"I am from India. In Indian marriage, the brother of groom pulls the ears of bride saying he will not trouble his sister.". But India is culturally diverse so it may happen in some parts of India.
