The whole idea of sexual orientation counseling was created because some straight people thought that
1. being gay was terrible
2. gays couldn't possibly be happy being gay
3. it was their straight people's obligation to do something about this by sexual orientation counseling, which is a kind of deprogramming.
The problem is, sexual orientation isn't a choice. It can't be "fixed.
Some gay people have been temporarily deprogrammed, but for nearly all, the operating word is temporary. You can't fool mother nature.

Sounds like a smokescreen for Christian-rightists who believe certain "deviant" sexualities can and should be treated as a mental disease to be eradicated from decent society (despite all the contrary evidence). Avoid them like the (gay?) plague, I say...

It depends on what exactly you mean. There is the kind given to someone to help them accept who and what they are. Or the more negatative kind that is supposed to help a gay person become straight.
